Surge protectors that promise to protect your expensive equipment have been around for a long time. How well do they deliver on their claims, and what should you buy?

  2. My wife bought me in June, the Monster Vertex XL surge protector for my PC. My last Monster Surge Protector was old and outdated. This new one has a $200,000 damage of lighting strike warranty on fried hardware. And also can withstand up to 5,000 Joles. Most lighting strikes are from 2,000 to 3,000 Joles. I’ve had lighting strike where I live twice in the past. Luckily it never went through my outlet power lines. After I got this new Monster Vertex XL surge Protector. I bought another one, same one. For our router and cable modem in the other room. Nobody thinks about safety against lighting much today. Back in 2007, my area had a massive lighting strike. It struck my moms house. Fried her router. We went to Best Buy I bought her a new router and set it up for her. Think people, this could happen to anybody.

  7. Linus didn’t cover the surge protector on/off switch. These are set to TURN OFF if a certain amount of voltage is reached and this stops an electric flow. At least that is how the surge protectors in m country work. The 3 prong explaination is not an option in most places in m country. if there is a 3rd prong, i useually use a 3 to 2 prong adapter because no outlets have 3 prongs. So I guess my point is surge protectors work for surges by TURNING OFF the power and stopping current from anything plugged into it from deliverying current until the button is reset. Anyway I dont understand why Linus didn’t mention this.

  12. Don’t know if you’ll read this… the surge protectors that I have seen now have ethernet plugs and antenna plugs also usb… can you do a video about this type of surge protectors????

  16. so here is basically the summary.

    don’t use a surge protector because they likely will stop being useful after a couple surges, and you have to physically unplug it anyway after that, so…why not just unplug the electronics during storms. kinda defeats the purpose.

    don’t use UPS system back up power supplies because they need to be powered on constantly and charge constantly even when off and make your power bill go up. some of them also beep and make noise.

    so basically what it comes down to is….just. DONT use anything. its best to keep an eye on the weather and unplug during bad storms or just keep UPS power supply unplugged and only plug it in and plug stuff into during bad storms to be prepared.

    there is no easy way to deal with this issue apparently. everything requires you to physically keep an eye on things and unplug or plug things.

  17. I have an ac unit causing power surges and my surge protector doesn’t seem to be doing its job although it’s new and handles high watts and joules. I give up.

  37. I have surge protectors but they still manage to burn my blanket, heating pads, and lamp. They also managed to blew off a couple of sockets in my house too. They are the experts!🧐

  39. I had no idea that a surge protected power strip would still work after a power surge. The joule rating is cumulative. It can be used up over 10 years in 100 small surges, or all at once. But if you CANT SEE the indicator light, or your surge protector doesnt have an aubile alarm, youd never know it wasnt working anymore. I just lost my washer and dryer from damage to my power line from a storm and a surge protector that was likely no longer working. Hower my 86" tv and home theater was likely saved from a new surger protector with a high joule rating i bought last year. That thing popped so loud i heard it happen and could see the glow from the indicator light went off under my media console. I immediately unplugged all that.

    UL (underwriters laboratories) certified
    Clamping voltage below 400 volts
    Joules more than 600

  42. The power strip surge protector is helpful as it gives some protection, and if there is a nearby storm you can unplug just the
    power strip, and not have to individually unplug the TV, and the Cable box, and the Game console, and the Sound System.

TECHQUICKIE< the joules rating doesn’t tell you what is the "response time" how long is the surge protectors response time because if the power surge is 2 seconds or more it will damage everything that is plugged into the surge protector? Most surge protectors use VAR but the VAR is rated in Joules? because the VAR for 300 joules and a VAR for 4500 Joules I don’t see in the VAR data sheets rated in joules

  48. Dang. Just got my 4k Tv, PS5, modem and soundbar fried to oblivion.
    Had a cheapo surge protector but it just wasnt enough 😭

  50. This video is too simplistic.
    Some power strips have built in surge protection.
    Also Linus didn’t mention getting surge protection installed in the switchboard.
